Asanas for yoga are defined as "posture;" its literal sanskrit meaning is "seat." Originally, the asanas were used as stable postures for prolonged meditation. It is much more than a form of stretching, asanas open the energy channels, chakras and psychic centers of the body. They are specific movements that enhance the body's energy flow.  The Asanas purify and strengthen the body while controling and focusing the mind. Asana is one of the eight limbs of classical Yoga, which teaches us that asana should be steady and comfortable, firm yet relaxed.  If you are experiancing pain or feeling very uncomfortable you will need to ease the posture to get the benefits.
When holding a yoga posture, make sure you can breathe slowly and deeply, using Dirga or Ujjiayi Pranayama. Take the posture as far as you can go, holding where you feel a good stretch and/or your body working, but don't feel pain, strain or fatigue.  You will find you can go a little deeper each time you practise.  The physical techniques of Yoga are the stepping stones to meditation. According to Patanjali, 'Yoga is the cessation of the modifications of the mind'.

Yoga aims to achieve the maximum results with the minimum expenditure of energy. The different yoga poses have been devised to bring a rich supply of blood to the brain and to the various parts of the body, especially the spine, the nerve center of the body. The yoga different asana's work by stretching, bending and twisting the spinal column in different directions to promote the overall health of the nerves.
The objective is to purify the body. Once the body is purified, Prana (vital energy) can be conserved and the individual becomes healthy and conscious  and has more energy.   Endurance is the key and of the  utmost importance in all of the Asana work.

Consistency and application in yoga asana practice is a vital necessity if one is to realise the full potential of the Yoga process. If the foundations of a building are not correctly laid, the structure will fall down. So too, if a Yoga student  has not gained a certain degree of mastery over the yoga poses he/she can not successfully proceed to the advanced disciplines. This mastery is achieved by practising within your limits regularly and improving each time your practise.  It is not about achieving each asana the first tim you try.
Initially the primary prerequisite to peace of mind is posture. yoga poses are practiced to gain steady posture, health and lightness in the body. All yoga poses are intended to directly or indirectly quiet the mind. The majority of Asana have been devised to build up different parts of the body and to develop the strength required by the more advanced physical disciplines. Therefore the purpose of the yoga poses is to recondition the system, both mind and body, and to develop the nervous and glandular systems.
You will feel at peace at the end of a yoga asana class because there is a natural realignment of your body which leads to a natural realignment of your perception of life and of who you are.  This feeling will fade which is why you need to practise regularly until your body becomes able to sustain this on an ongoing basis.

 Asanas for yoga
Meaning of asana
The Sanskrit word asana derives from the verbal root as, meaning "to sit" or "to be present," and, in the context of the Yoga tradition, means "to be established in a particular posture."
Historically the term refers to a wide range of bodily postures that have been transmitted by teachers in India for thousands of years. Because the forms of many of these postures have been more or less precisely defined in the classic texts of the Hatha Yoga tradition, each asana is characterised by certain objective criteria; and, in fact, one traditional definition of asana is "the arrangement of the different components of the body in a specific way." However, the history of Asana is not a record of the possibilities of bodily contortion, nor simply a record of an ancient form of physical culture; rather, Asana evolved as an integral part of a comprehensive spiritual practice oriented toward purification, accomplishment, and realisation.
