Foot Massage

A foot massage uses 4 varieties of massage strokes on the feet and lower leg. The depth of strokes will determine whether the massage is intended to be a relaxation massage, a deep tissue massage or a remedial massage.

Step 1 - Warm Up

It is important to start your massage by warming up and increasing the blood flow to the feet.

Start by placing warm hands on the top and bottom of the foot you are going to massage. When warm squeeze hands together and release a few times (with the foot still in between the hands). Then squeeze hands together at the bottom of the foot and whilst still applying comfortable pressure to the foot sweep the hands to the end of the toes and repeat this motion a few times.

Step 2 - Top of the Foot

Now is the time to apply a quality massage oil to your hands (make sure you warm up the oil before massaging).

Place both thumbs on the top of the foot between the bones and place fingers on the sole of the foot. Applying comfortable pressure slide the thumbs and fingers from the top of the foot down the grove between the bones to the ankle and back up to the toes. Repeat the motion several times for each grove.

Step 3 - Bottom of the Foot

Using both thumbs apply comfortable pressure to middle part of the heel. In a single motion move both thumbs up the arch of the foot to the gap between the big and second toe and back down to the heel. Repeat the motion several times.

Place one hand under the ankle and then using one thumb make a circular motion on the base of the foot from the heel, through the arch and onto the ball of the foot. Repeat the circular motion from the ball of the foot to the heel. Repeat the circular motion several times and make sure you massage all areas on the sole of the foot.

Step 4 - The Toes

Finally starting with the big toe using your thumb and forefinger make circular motions from the base to the tip of the toe and back to the base again. Repeat this motion several times and then wiggle each toe forwards, backwards and side to side.

Repeat the circular motion and wiggling for each toe.

Step 5 - Warm Down

Once you have massaged each toe then repeat Step 1 for each foot.

Reflexology Foot Zones

Foot reflexology believes that there are 4 zones in your feet and massaging each zone has a corresponding affect on another part of your body.

The diagram above shows the 4 zones in your feet, the zones correspond to the following areas of your body:

Red Zone - represents your head and neck.

Blue Zone - represents the chest and shoulders.

Green Zone - represents the organs above your navel and under your ribs.

Purple Zone - represents the lower abdomen and pelvis.
