power yoga or astanga vinyasa
Astanga vinyasa flows using dance like sequences held together through the breath. It is commonly referred to as power yoga because of it energizing nature. It is thought to be one of the better yoga's for increasing fitness which can present an initial challenge for beginners. The rigorous workouts gradually lead to self mastery as one is empowered and liberated as emotional and physical blocks are shifted. Practicing is a journey of self discovery. The movements of the dance like sequences act as a form of meditation through movement, attaining the deeper purpose of quieting the mind and opening the heart.
The asanas are synchronized with controlled breath and held together with inner energy body locks in a dance like sequence. This constant controlled activity and enhanced energy combines to tone the body and increase fitness and balance.
The basic practice is designed to:
therapeutically realign the body
increase strength, flexibility and stamina
release the muscular system
eliminating toxins, purifying blood
rebalance the skeletal system
massage internal organs.
Yogic text describes astanga vinyasa as making the spine as strong as a thunderbolt. Your mind is softened and enables your body to release tension and shed disease.

Astanga yoga is different to other forms of yoga is vinyasa (flow). It is a continuous, dynamic flow linking both the movement and the breath. It is a very detailed and specific order of postures, there are three different series, each containing approximately 40 postures and lasting from 1 - 2 hours.
Yoga Chikitsa - the primary series meaning therapy realigns the spine and detoxifies the body while building physical strength, flexibility and stamina.
Nadi Shodana - the intermediate series meaning nerve purification, the practice cleanses the nerve channels, purifies and strengthens the nervous system. The spine becomes lithe and strong using back bends, and steadiness is practiced using headstands.
Sthira Bhaga - 'divine stability' the advanced series is divided into 4 sections. Very few people practice at this level because of the endurance, control and humility required for the sequences.
The primary series can be learnt at home, using a book or a dvd, the intermediate and advanced levels will require further instruction. I always recommend having a good book before you attend the advanced classes, that way you will get more out of your classes once you arrived prepared, you can hen practice more efficiently in between classes to master the sequences more quickly.
