Quality yoga mats
Our reaction to color can have a profound impact on our lives, when practising yoga consider the colour of your yoga mat very carefully here at the holistic health spa we have researched the meanings of the different colours and how they may impact your yoga practise.

The history of yoga mats
The yoga mats favoured by the ancient yogi were the skin of the tiger. Fortunately for us, and for tigers, things have changed since then.
In the 1960’s the  non-slip sticky yoga mat was introduced, but it wasn’t much more than carpet underlay until today.
Today you can practice on mats in a multitude of colours, patterns and even shapes.
A good yoga mat is thick, light and easy to roll and easy to keep clean. Soft and pleasing to touch.
Most mats a 2ft wide by 6ft long in a rectangle shape, some wider 3ft mats are also available.  It really comes down to personal choice.
Be careful when purchasing, as cheaper is not always better, consider how often you will use it and see it as an investment for the long term, and treat yourself to the best you can afford.
Why use a quality yoga mat
Quality yoga mats ensure safety and comfort – they give a non-slip surface and protect against cold and hard floors.
We have always recommended having your own yoga mat, even if your gym or yoga studio provides them. Not only because of the obvious hygiene benefits, but also because having your own mat allows you to have your own personal space to practice yoga.
People will be more aware of your space if you have a mat they can see, it is also good manners to give others the space they need for the class.  This can be hard in a crowded room, but remember to say excuse me and please when asking some one to move over it really does go along way.
Owning your own mat offers many advantages, and the knowledge that you can unroll your mat at any time can encourage you to do yoga more often - at home, on holiday or whenever the mood takes you. It may encourage and help you to develop and deepen your practice.
Your yoga mat may take a short time in order to reach its maximum grip and stickiness.  So try it out a few times before you head off to class the first time.
Also use a yoga bag to keep it in good shape and avoid keeping your yoga mat in direct sunlight especially in the car.
 The environment
Who would have thought that your choice of yoga mat could have an impact on your health and our environment? Well it can!

We all want to improve our health but it’s not easy to know what’s best - we’re bombarded with confusing information about the effects of chemicals on our health and environment but what do you do with this information?

Let’s face it, it’s pretty tricky to live a pure life these days, free of chemicals, pollution etc…in fact downright impossible, no matter where or how you live!
We believe that the solution is to do what we can, bit-by-bit, knowing that with every little bit will make a difference!

Most yoga mats available today contain some nasty chemicals - Phthalates, AZO, Phenol and heavy metals - which we now know are not great for us, or our environment.

When purchasing your next yoga mat consider the environment and do some research to make sure you are getting a product that has as few chemicals as possible and wont pollute the earth when you are finished with it.

The yoga mats here at the holistic health spa are all chosen for their quality and environmental impact as well as their good value.  All you have to do is choose the design, enjoy shopping knowing you are keeping the planet in mind.
