Many of the different types of yoga practice yoga flow. It is the use of asana's - postures in a sequence to provide the flow. This flow allows the yoga practice to incorporate meditation through movement. Rather than continually changing postures, you flow through to the next one maintaining the stillness in the mind. The more often the flow is practiced the more familiar one becomes and the deeper the meditation becomes.
The most well known sequences are the sun and moon salutations, each type of yoga has a slightly different version utilizing similar asana to move from a standing position to the floor and returning back to a standing posture. The common thread it that each sequence tries to utilize as much of the possible range of movements as it can to warm the body up or cool it down to prepare for practice or to finish the practice.
Using the flow is also an easier way for people to remember as most sequences have around 8 - 10 postures to move through. It also allows the yogi to include more in their practice as they flow through rather than stopping and starting from a savasanna or resting pose. |
